Tips for Hairstyle and Makeup for Your Portrait Session

Hair Style and Makeup

Everyone wants to look their best when having a portrait done but sometimes we are just not sure how to make that happen. In my previous blog I talked about dress but hair and make up are just as important as clothing. Above all you want to look like you but with today’s hairstyles it is not always that easy.  Try to wear your hair as simple as possible and as  off the face as possible. I know when someone has their hair covering one eye I am in there trying to move the hair away so we can see the persons eyes which are the window to the sp. The same goes for long hair worn close to the face.   Hair falling down onto the sides of the face (currently very much in style) create distracting shadows. Bangs that come down too low onto the soul and a very most important part of the face.

Make up is equally important. What you think is great for every day might not work in photography. Eye makeup should be blended no sharp demarcation lines between colors. AVOID WHITE above or below the eyes. It does not photograph well at all. Too much color above and below the eyes attracts attention to itself. It actually takes attention AWAY from the eyes, rather than attracting the viewer to the eyes. Foundation makeup should be blended at the jawline, so that there is no demarcation between the face and the neck.

I run into a lot of women who do not wear make up which really doesn’t work for photographs If you are one of those people who thinks to wear make up makes you feel like a clown I am here to tell you in your photographs you will just look natural. I suggest at the very least you wear some foundation and blush, then take the shine down with some finishing powder. Wear some mascara and a soft color lip gloss and your features will look great in your photograph. If you literally have never worked with make up before be sure to practice days ahead and don’t wait till the day of the shoot to figure it out, you will just end up frustrated. I actually had to put a gals make up on for her once and due to light issues I really don’t have time to be a make up artist as we need to get busy taking those amazing photos of you.

Of course if you have questions I am always happy to help just give me a call and I will help you as much as possible. Another option, if you are so inclined, is to have a professional do your makeup the day of the shoot. Just let her know whether you are a glamour girl or someone who prefers a more natural look.

If this is a family session and you are a glamour girl you might want to tone it down a bit so  you fit in with the rest of the family, I’ m just sayin!

Follow these tips and you will be thrilled with the way you look in your photos! Oh, and don’t worry if you have fine lines, blemishes or  wrinkles I have my trusty photo shop as I do standard touchups with my compliments!   See you at your photo shoot!

PREPARING FOR YOUR PHOTO SESSION

There is more to a successful photo session then just showing up with a smile. I first want to say this is all for YOUR benefit!

Grooming is first and foremost very important. Men should have a hair cut about a week before the session so that they don’t have that just cut look. Same goes for women. Plan the timing of your hair cut and or color so that you look your very best. Wear a bit more make up then normal as we tend to wash out in photographs. If you don’t wear make up then I suggest you at least wear some mascara and a soft color lip gloss. I promise you won’t look like a clown it ‘s just to show of your features in their best light.

The selection of proper clothing for your session is a critical factor in the preparation for a successful photo session. If the clothing is noticeable in a portrait, it could easily become distracting. Your beautiful faces are the focus so it could be the difference between a very successful portrait and just another picture.

Dark clothing tends to slenderize, darker clothing helps to blend the bodies with the background so that the faces are the most important part of the photograph. Dark colors tend to slenderize and light colors seem to add weight to the bodies. Colors should be toned down as bright colors attract attention away from the face.  Colors should be dark and not bright. When choosing lighter colors please avoid pink tones and yellow tones.

Prints or patterns as well as logos  no matter how small become a big distraction. Wear long sleeves if possible.  dark socks and shoes are very important. I won’t say long sleeves are a must especially for the women but it does help. Lay your entire wardrobe out on the bed from top to shoes.   I know it sounds hard to figure out what to wear so I have included a couple of examples.   4665pp see attached notes If you notice this photograph is beautiful but look at the two with short or sleeveless and then look at those with long sleeves. You will notice whose faces  immediately pop.  Again this is a beautiful photograph of this family I am just showing you the difference between long sleeves and not. The choice is yours in the end.

Keeping a group in similar colors focuses the attention of the portrait to the faces and individuals that make up the portrait. Dissimilar colors in groups tend to be more distracting. White tops with khakis or jeans can look very nice and casual, but if anyone in your family is super pale, white can make pale skin look paler.

Jeans are the timeless choice and they’re great for fun, casual pictures because they are flattering and don’t show wrinkles or panty lines.

See the example below then compare it to the one above. This shows you exactly what I am talking about in regard to prints and continuity of colors. Again this is a beautiful family photograph but there are some distracting elements. I recognize that sometimes we have children who aren’t really happy to sit for a photo much less wear what we as parents want them too, you might consider yourself lucky they even show up  so don’t stress if they refuse to conform. We will work with what we have and I will strive to give you the most beautiful of family photographs.

Photography is My Passion

Have you ever wondered where and how photographers got there start? My clients ask that question of me all the time. So I thought I would take the time to tell you the story of how I got my start.

I was always interested in taking photos even as a child. My first camera was a brownie followed by various improvements through the years. I would work on my compositions and chased the right light but they just never came out as I intended. The years flew by and I was busy raising  children and working in the corporate world with every intention of “some day” getting serious about photography. One day I got a call from my sister Carol who excitedly told me she was studying photography with a professional photographer in San Juan Capistrano  and that a field trip was being planned to Canyon De Chelly in Arizona. I told her she was living my dream! I mean not only photography but going to visit Anasazi Indian ruins with a Navajo guide on horseback! I mean WOW really?!  I am fascinated with American Indian history and well I have already said I wanted to learn photography! She urged me to come to the classes and go on the trip as well. Now I was still raising teenagers at the time and did not have the proper equipment but with her urging. I borrowed a camera took those classes and went on that trip! It was amazing and changed my life. After that there was no turning back. Carol and I continued our studies, I purchased professional equipment a bit at a time and we attended workshops all over the country that took place in our beautiful National Parks. Through those workshops we were able to study with such great photographers as Art Wolfe, Galen Rowell and many others. Not to mention the fun we had, oh my do we have stories! We photographed not only beautiful places but all kinds of wildlife too. It was amazing!

As the years went byCarol shifted her interests to wedding photography and I moved to Cape Cod  where I opened a gift shop gallery. In my gallery I sold my beautiful photographs, photographs I had taken on all those wonderful trips as well as amazing images of Cape Cod. When I moved back home to Carlsbad I felt it was time to stop schlepping my gear all over the back country, (not too safe for a gal by herself) and redirect my focus. I knew I still wanted to be a photographer and that for the most part I wanted to be out in nature doing it. Since I had photographed wildlife I felt pets was a natural transition and so My Puppy Dog Tales was born. I found I was really good with pets and very adept at bringing out their inner spirit. Very quickly my business expanded as families wanted to be included. I was having such a great time working with fabulous pets and their wonderful families that I decided to expand again and again. This past year I changed the name of my company to better reflect my current business and so I became Photography by Audrey Rose. Of course Audrey is my name and Rose was my recently passed Mother’s middle name. You will see a butterfly in the logo because my Mom loved them so much. Anyway I setup a studio, did a lot of studying, purchased more equipment and have added newborns and babies to the mix. If you have not visited my website please do so and you will see all the types of Photography I do such as engagement, seniors, expectant parents, pets, babies and children, families and while it is not particularly mentioned, I also do corporate work as well as head shots. But if you want to take me with you on your fabulous vacation I would be more than happy to photograph you in the amazing scenery of your trip!

No matter what or whom you have me photograph rest assured that  you will be in good hands as photography is my passion. Together we will make beautiful photographs that you will treasure forever!
