Tips for Hairstyle and Makeup for Your Portrait Session

Hair Style and Makeup

Everyone wants to look their best when having a portrait done but sometimes we are just not sure how to make that happen. In my previous blog I talked about dress but hair and make up are just as important as clothing. Above all you want to look like you but with today’s hairstyles it is not always that easy.  Try to wear your hair as simple as possible and as  off the face as possible. I know when someone has their hair covering one eye I am in there trying to move the hair away so we can see the persons eyes which are the window to the sp. The same goes for long hair worn close to the face.   Hair falling down onto the sides of the face (currently very much in style) create distracting shadows. Bangs that come down too low onto the soul and a very most important part of the face.

Make up is equally important. What you think is great for every day might not work in photography. Eye makeup should be blended no sharp demarcation lines between colors. AVOID WHITE above or below the eyes. It does not photograph well at all. Too much color above and below the eyes attracts attention to itself. It actually takes attention AWAY from the eyes, rather than attracting the viewer to the eyes. Foundation makeup should be blended at the jawline, so that there is no demarcation between the face and the neck.

I run into a lot of women who do not wear make up which really doesn’t work for photographs If you are one of those people who thinks to wear make up makes you feel like a clown I am here to tell you in your photographs you will just look natural. I suggest at the very least you wear some foundation and blush, then take the shine down with some finishing powder. Wear some mascara and a soft color lip gloss and your features will look great in your photograph. If you literally have never worked with make up before be sure to practice days ahead and don’t wait till the day of the shoot to figure it out, you will just end up frustrated. I actually had to put a gals make up on for her once and due to light issues I really don’t have time to be a make up artist as we need to get busy taking those amazing photos of you.

Of course if you have questions I am always happy to help just give me a call and I will help you as much as possible. Another option, if you are so inclined, is to have a professional do your makeup the day of the shoot. Just let her know whether you are a glamour girl or someone who prefers a more natural look.

If this is a family session and you are a glamour girl you might want to tone it down a bit so  you fit in with the rest of the family, I’ m just sayin!

Follow these tips and you will be thrilled with the way you look in your photos! Oh, and don’t worry if you have fine lines, blemishes or  wrinkles I have my trusty photo shop as I do standard touchups with my compliments!   See you at your photo shoot!

PREPARING FOR YOUR PHOTO SESSION

There is more to a successful photo session then just showing up with a smile. I first want to say this is all for YOUR benefit!

Grooming is first and foremost very important. Men should have a hair cut about a week before the session so that they don’t have that just cut look. Same goes for women. Plan the timing of your hair cut and or color so that you look your very best. Wear a bit more make up then normal as we tend to wash out in photographs. If you don’t wear make up then I suggest you at least wear some mascara and a soft color lip gloss. I promise you won’t look like a clown it ‘s just to show of your features in their best light.

The selection of proper clothing for your session is a critical factor in the preparation for a successful photo session. If the clothing is noticeable in a portrait, it could easily become distracting. Your beautiful faces are the focus so it could be the difference between a very successful portrait and just another picture.

Dark clothing tends to slenderize, darker clothing helps to blend the bodies with the background so that the faces are the most important part of the photograph. Dark colors tend to slenderize and light colors seem to add weight to the bodies. Colors should be toned down as bright colors attract attention away from the face.  Colors should be dark and not bright. When choosing lighter colors please avoid pink tones and yellow tones.

Prints or patterns as well as logos  no matter how small become a big distraction. Wear long sleeves if possible.  dark socks and shoes are very important. I won’t say long sleeves are a must especially for the women but it does help. Lay your entire wardrobe out on the bed from top to shoes.   I know it sounds hard to figure out what to wear so I have included a couple of examples.   4665pp see attached notes If you notice this photograph is beautiful but look at the two with short or sleeveless and then look at those with long sleeves. You will notice whose faces  immediately pop.  Again this is a beautiful photograph of this family I am just showing you the difference between long sleeves and not. The choice is yours in the end.

Keeping a group in similar colors focuses the attention of the portrait to the faces and individuals that make up the portrait. Dissimilar colors in groups tend to be more distracting. White tops with khakis or jeans can look very nice and casual, but if anyone in your family is super pale, white can make pale skin look paler.

Jeans are the timeless choice and they’re great for fun, casual pictures because they are flattering and don’t show wrinkles or panty lines.

See the example below then compare it to the one above. This shows you exactly what I am talking about in regard to prints and continuity of colors. Again this is a beautiful family photograph but there are some distracting elements. I recognize that sometimes we have children who aren’t really happy to sit for a photo much less wear what we as parents want them too, you might consider yourself lucky they even show up  so don’t stress if they refuse to conform. We will work with what we have and I will strive to give you the most beautiful of family photographs.

April News (Featuring Expectant Parents Photography Special)

March went out with a bang as I finally got  back to work after a 2 month recovery from knee replacement surgery. I worked with a large blended family and they have ordered large prints plus a beautiful coffee table album that I am just starting to design. I really enjoy designing these albums as there is no limit to my creativity. One of the family member was missing from the session so the family took her photo in different poses on another date and I had her photo shopped in. While the lighting and coloring was different in the woman’s photo, my guys were able adjust the lighting on her and you can’t tell she wasn’t present for the family session.
I also worked with a family and their hard of hearing dog. We had so much fun and I’m looking forward to sharing their proofs with them next week.  In a couple of days I will be working with another family and their dog at the beach. Since we just had a couple of storms the sky promises to be dramatic. Dramatic skies do just that, add drama to any photograph. They are looking for a large canvas wrap to hang on the wall and I can already tell they will be thrilled with the results.
